Description

  • height 38 in.; width 71 1/2 in.; depth 29 3/4 in.
  • 96.5 cm; 181.5 cm; 75.5 cm
surmounted by a molded Villefranche de Conflent marble top above three frieze drawers centered by a lion mask escutcheon and above two panelled doors opening to six drawers, flanked by fluted and columnar uprights, front and sides decorated with a gilt-bronze roundel modeled with bacchanal scenes.

Condition

Overall in good condition with the usual minor scratches, dents and nicks to veneers and carcass consistent with age and use. Slight tarnishing to gilt-bronze in places. The marble with the usual chips to edges and scratches to surface consistent with age. Vertical age crack to left-hand side panel from top to bottom.

Catalogue Note

The present commode is closely based on the model executed by the eighteenth century ébéniste Guillaume Benneman, received maître in 1785, adapted from a model by Joseph Stöckel, received maître in 1775, and supplied to Queen Marie-Antoinette in 1786 for the Salon des jeux at Fontainebleau.
