of oval form with a foliate frieze centered by an oval cartouche inscribed: GRAND PRIX / DES / VOITURETTES / OFFERT PAR / LE PETIT JOURNAL / 1908, flanked by rampant lioness form handles, the underside of centerpiece and liner numbered 925656.

Condition

Overall good condition, with traces of dirt and minor areas of tarnishing with usual old scratches, some slight wear consistent with age and use, very minor dents to liner.

Catalogue Note

By 1878 the house of Christofle, firmly established as one of the leading Parisian silversmiths, was nearing its fiftieth anniversary. Begun by Charles Christofle and his brother-in-law in 1830, the firm rose to prominence under the patronage of Louis-Philippe, continuing to serve as suppliers of choice under Napoleon III. The firm remained Christofle remained favorites of the main 19th century exhibitions, and were highly praised in one of the jury reports: "on admirait la beauté et la solidité, mais on admirait surtout le goût, la pureté, la richesse de ses formes."
