Catalogue Note

The present lot was painted around 1897-1900, when the artist lived in Het Gooi. In this period, he painted the cattle market on the Groest in Hilversum several times. According to G.H. Marius, the stay in Hilversum enabled the artist to distance himself from the Hague School in style as well as subject matter. As Richard Bionda noticed in his book on the artist, De Zwart studied the attitudes and movements of the farmers and the cattle many times, resulting in several drawings. Compare R. Bionda, Willem de Zwart 1862-1931, Haarlem 1984, 43-45.
