Catalogue Note

Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller was born in Amsterdam and moved to The Hague in 1879, where he became a member of Pulchri Studio. In 1881 he returned to Amsterdam. From that moment onwards he became a productive landscape painter in the tradition of the Hague School, drawing inspiration from the villages around Amsterdam. The present lot bears some resemblance to a winter landscape in the collection of the Museum Mesdag, which is sometimes identified as Monnickendam. In 1893 Wijsmuller sold this painting in Pulchri Studio to H.W. Mesdag. The present lot is one of the undisputed highlights in the oeuvre of the artist.
