Condition

The following condition report was kindly provided by Simon Parkes Conservation, Inc.: This painting is in beautiful condition. The canvas has an old lining. The paint is stable. It has been recently cleaned. In our opinion, Jongkind himself left the blue in the upper sky painted very thin and in some places rubbed it even thinner to reveal the gesso color. There is a little restoration along the horizon in the sky, to slightly diminish some of the stronger pentimenti here. But overall the condition is lovely and the picture should be hung as is.

Catalogue Note

Jongkind's Saint-Parize-le-Châtel, dating from 1869 and once known as L'auberge de la montée de Balbins (Musée du Petit Palais, Paris) is closely related to the present work.
