Description

  • Benjamin Williams Leader, R.A.
  • sunny evening, north wales
  • signed and dated l.l.: B. W. LEADER 1884.-5
  • oil on canvas

Condition

STRUCTURE: Relined. SURFACE: Areas of surface craquelure appear throughout the canvas but mainly in the sky. The painting is dirty and should benefit from cleaning. Old retouchings have discoloured and this is mainly evident in the sky. UV LIGHT: Light sweeping restoration appears in the sky and in the water on the lower right side, otherwise small areas of retouching appear throughout the centre. We believe that some of these restorations can be improved and reduced. FRAME: Contained in a modern plaster moulded gilt painted frame. COLOUR COMPARISON: The colours are not as bright as the catalogue illustration suggests and there are more yellow tones throughout.
