- study for the figure representing 'recreation' in the hours

Catalogue Note
The present study in wash and bodycolour, showing a young woman in flowing draperies and with a stringed musical instrument which rests on the ground and which she supports with her right arm, is loosely related to a figure in Burne-Jones's composition The Hours (Sheffield Art Gallery). In the finished painting, which was first exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1883, the girl's head is shown looking more directly towards the spectator and leaning to her left.
