Catalogue Note
Henry Somerset, 7th Duke of Beaufort, was an enthusiastic coach driver, and in the mid 1830's acquired a coachline between London and Brighton which he named the 'Beaufort'. This was a glamorous route, and it set out from the Bull and Mouth inn. This was situated on Regent's Circus, known today as Piccadilly Circus. Unfortunately for the Duke, his acquisition of this coachline came at the end of the golden age of coaching, and coaches were soon replaced by trains.
