Description

  • James Seymour
  • A grey and a chestnut hunter held by a groom, a huntsman with two hounds by his side
  • oil on panel

Condition

The painting is made up of three horizontal panels supported by cradling blocks. There is horizontal split to the upper panel which is supported by a single cradling block. There is a horizontal split to the lower panel which is supported by a single cradling block. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals a number of small passages of retouching, for example to the lower section of the huntsman's coat, to the hind right leg of the chestnut horse, and in the background. There are scattered retouchings to the horses, to the groom's face, and in the sky. A layer of varnish prevents further analysis. Held in a black painted frame.
