Description

in a ready posture, the tubular turban arching backward and forming a long curve completed by the loincloth trailing to the ground, wearing a close fitting xicolli with braided edges, large bead necklace, and with loosely knotted headbands.

Provenance

Acquired in the late 1960s

Catalogue Note

The refined face and slender body are most similar to depictions of the young Maize god, but his posture suggests he is a k'ayom, a title that is used for particular courtiers or singers at the court, see Miller (1975: figs. 22-24), and Miller and Martin (2004: 42). His distinctive turban may have been made from a paper and textile mixture.
