McKelvey most probably first visited Co.Donegal in the summer of 1924 after purchasing a motor car which suddenly afforded him a new-found degree of freedom to travel for both pleasure and painting. It is not surprising that the dramatic landscapes of Donegal were to become amongst his favourite subjects.
