Catalogue Note

Executed in June or July 1942 when Paul Henry and Mabel Young holidayed in Connemara. The fresh palette of the present work combined with the fluid handling where the paint is worked directly to the canvas with little or no over painting, is characteristic of the artist’s mature style and within a year or two of this picture being painted, Henry suffered an illness which resulted in near blindness and signalled the end of his painting career.

We are grateful to Dr S.B. Kennedy for his kind assistance with the cataloguing of this work which is numbered 1036 in his forthcoming catalogue of Paul Henry’s Drawings, Paintings and Illustrations.
