Catalogue Note
Haig executed the present work for William Burges, the architect appointed to re-design St Fin Barre's Cathedral in 1862 following a competition for the commission for which there were 63 entries.
The site of the cathedral has been a place of worship since the 7th Century, however, little remains of the medieval buildings, although a doorway in the boundary wall, stone basin and some carved stone heads can still be seen today. Since then a range of churches have stood on the site, the last being demolished in 1860 and was replaced by Burges's design.
