Catalogue Note
The present work is a smaller version of Foley's statue of Goldsmith which stands outside Trinity College Dublin today. Goldsmith is thought to have been born in Elgin co. Roscommon in 1728 and attended Trinity College from 1744 – 1749. After travelling extensively throughout Europe, Goldsmith returned to England in 1756, where he turned his hand to translating and writing. By 1764 his literary career was well-established and his best known works include She Stoops to Conquer and his poem The Traveller.
