Catalogue Note

Executed circa 1998 - 2000 in West Cork, the present work is strongly related to the artist's seminal landscape Departure from the Island (1992, Private Collection, exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, The West as Metaphor, 11 March – 24 April 2005).

Crozier's oeuvre displays a long standing affinity with the landscape around him and in particular, '...I've made a bit of a play for Cork. My connection with Cork city and West Cork goes back about fifty years, in my youth I was fond of walking and climbing, and by the early 1950s I had walked round and across Ireland and had climbed every hill and mountain worthy of note. But West Cork won my heart. I have returned to it many times over my life and about twenty years ago I bought a house in Kilcoe, near Skibbereen, and it is still the paradise it was half a century ago' (Crozier, in conversation with Brian McAvera, 'Constructions, Colour and Light', Irish Arts Review, Spring 2003, Vol. 20, No.1, pp.70-71).
