Catalogue Note
Although born in Japan, Nakamura has been living and working in Dublin since 1999. She developed a particular interest in the literature of Samuel Beckett and explains, ‘…I was enamoured with reading Beckett / the beauty and fear of Beckett’s repetition / the repetition swirls with subtle differences / sitting in his world makes me calm and makes my mind open…’ (Nakamura, quoted in Makiko Makamura Paintings, exh.cat., Farmleigh Gallery, Dublin, 10 November – 10 December 2006, p.5). His influence is clear in the quiet abstraction of the present work whilst the delicate application of paint and highly finished polish are redolent of Oriental lacquers, achieving a unique fusion of Eastern and Western elements.
Nakamura has exhibited extensively internationally and in Ireland, she has had solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Farmleigh Gallery, Dublin; Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast; Peppercanister Gallery, Dublin and the Ashford Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin.
