Catalogue Note

The dynamic geometric shapes interwoven with the vibrant colours and stylised figures of King, Queen, Prince and Princess, immediately belie Middleton's early training as a linen damask designer. His father Charles and Hugh Page had established their own business in Belfast to produce damask designs and Middleton joined them as an apprentice around 1927. As a result, graphic design principles underpin all is work and the present work in no exception in demonstrating the meticulous attention to detail so important in that industry (see lot 141 for further discussion of Middleton's style).
