Catalogue Note

Born in Dromore West, Co. Sligo, Collins became well known for his fascination and connection with the untamed Irish landscape, depicting it with an almost mystical manner blending abstract and figurative elements to create his own individual style. In the present work, he has brought this approach to the majestic Georgian facades that characterize the centre of Dublin where he had briefly studied at the National College of Art and Design. Belvedere Place is situated off Mountjoy square and is unsurprisingly, a listed terrace.

Collins’s distinctive combination of muted palette, mist and the use of distant illuminating light presents the grand terrace in all its splendour and alongside other Dublin works such as Liffey View (National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin) demonstrates his unique and versatile ability to encapsulate both rugged Irish landscape as well as urban Dublin cityscape.
