Catalogue Note

Executed in 1989, the artist explained that, 'the genesis of Wicklow Landscape from the Train was at once complicated and gratuitous.  In the autumn of 1989 I was travelling by train with my wife Sheelagh to a wedding in Rosslare when I glimpsed from the carriage window what I realised could be a very inspiring landscape of beautiful trees, a rushing river and romantic little cliffs gilt with morning sunlight. For many years previous to that day I had become increasingly fond of eighteenth-century Irish landscape painting, finding serenity and peace in the work of men like George Barret or Thomas Roberts. The momentary encounter with this landscape convinced me I must paint a picture that would be as much as anything else a gesture of respect to these markers. I used a direct technique of washes of diluted oil over a tinted ground, and soft-haired brushes to celebrate my admiration for their achievement, while at the same time holding the picture within the terms of my own less academic style' (T.P.Flanagan, quoted, op.cit., p.77).
