Catalogue Note
The present work was painted circa 1931-1937, when the artist was living in Hammersmith, London. The scene depicts the now demolished Atlanta and Albert Wharves on the Thames Quayside, where the so-called Bell Steps lead down from Hammersmith Terrace onto the waterfront.
The sharp angles of the architecture in the background provide an apt contrast to the fluid movement of the seagull in the centre of the composition and the arrangement is highly reminiscent of Mario Sironi's modernist cityscapes such as Urban Landscape with Lorry (c.1920, Private Collection).
