Catalogue Note

Painted near Eichenau circa 1918, the present work is one of only a few conventional portraits that Bouzianis executed. Commissioned by the sitter, Bouzianis also portrayed other members of the family (Private collection), who were prominent tobacco merchants.

Following the birth of his son, Bouzianis accepted a small number of portrait commissions between 1917-19, to increase his earnings. He soon abandoned this lucrative source of income as he felt that conventional portraiture, as requested by his patrons, was compromising his art.
