Catalogue Note
This type of Buddha image is frequently found in the art from late in the Anuradhapura Period (circa 500 B.C - 10th century). The shoulders are broad and angular, the neck short and the large flame finial on the head is particularly characteristic. The pose is fairly rigid to denote a serious and deep mediation. Compare to Von Schroeder, U.; Buddhist Sculptures of Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, 1990, pp. 203-207, Plates 53F, 54 A-H and 55 D-M.
