well carved with a finely pleated robe draped elegantly over his upper body and looped over his left shoulder, richly bejeweled wearing a foliate collar with matching armband and a pendant looped necklace suspending two vidyadharas centering a faceted jewel, his wavy hair gathered in a double-looped topknot secured by an elaborate headdress with festoons and rosettes, his face bearing a serene, introspective expression, the figure backed by a halo

Condition

References are true right and true left. The separately carved parasol from the top of the halo is missing, the mortise for insertion visible at the top edge. Left edge of halo sliced. The tip of the nose is chipped, the overall surface extensively exfoliated and chipped with some brown colored staining. The right arm broken above the elbow the break extending down the edge of the robe, the left arm is broken just below elbow. Diagonally and irregularly broken at hip level, with large circular section of the robe chipped away. No restoration.

Catalogue Note

The Bodhisattva was a popular image in the growing Mahayana Buddhist tradition of the Gandhara region. Contrasting the Buddha, who is simply dressed in monastic robes, the Bodhisattva is dressed like a Kushan prince wearing elaborate jewels.
