Catalogue Note

The William P. Frye was built in Bath, Maine in 1901 by Arthur Sewall & Company. It measured 332.4 by 45.4 by 26.2 feet and weighed 2998 tons. She was one of the largest and finest steel ships ever constructed in America, being virtually a sister ship to the big Standard Oil square-riggers, Astral, Acme and Atlas. She was named after the United States senator from Maine who had long been a champion of shipping interests.
