Catalogue Note

The sitter for this elegant painting by James Archer was Mary M. Carrie the wife of Philip Carrie, the British ambassador to Constantinople. Her daughter's portrait was painted by Fausto Zonaro in a painting entitled The Sedan Chair (Sotheby's, 22 November 2002, lot 127).
