Condition

The canvas has been lined. There appears to be some water staining to teh reverse. There are lines of craquelure to a patch in the sky, the hull of the ship and the water. Examination under UV light reveals retouching to the edges but no other apparent retouching. Unframed.

Catalogue Note

Built in the Webb and Allen shipyard in Manhattan, the steamship Alexander II, originally named the Astoria, was sold to Russian owners in 1855. It was sold back to the Americans as "Alexander", but later returned to Russian hands as "Alexander II"
