Catalogue Note

Prince Paul Troubetzkoy began a series of studies of cowboys and rodeo figures in 1920, the year these two sculptures were created. He continued modelling these figures into the 1930s, including the present version, and they all reveal a dynamic plasticity, far removed from his more composed portraits. As in the offered lots the horses are caught in extreme movement, and the spontaneity and lightness of modelling successfully captures this energy.
