Description

  • height: 85cm., 33½in
campana shaped, painted with a scene of a noble family, gilt acanthus leaf border, the reverse with impressive burnished gilt foliate and berry frieze on a matt blue ground, the flared circular foot similarly decorated, the bulbous domed base with acanthus leaves and lotus flowers, flanked by gilt metal handles, the whole on square gilt metal plinth, with blue Imperial cypher for Nicholas I, dated 1826

Condition

In general good condition for its age and size. There is an obvious chip to the gilt band below the domed base and patches of obvious wear to the gilding. There are further areas of wear to the gilt paint throughout, particularly to the rim of the circular foot and the upper side of the domed base. The metal handles on the base are probably original. A recommended restorer confirmed it would be near impossible to tell for sure. The protruding leaves below the handles on both sides are probably replaced. On the flared gilt rim at the top there is one obvious area of restoration. This could be made invisible at a relatively low cost. Please contact the department for a recommended restorer.
