Description

  • 46 by 41cm., 17 3/4 by 16in
the Archangel depicted advancing, his hand outstretched to convey delivery of a message, against a background of soaring architecture, an atrium with a tent-shaped canopy from which red vellum is suspended on an ivory coloured ground, the raised border mounted with a finely chased silver basma

Condition

There is wear to the background and some restoration to the buildings. The faces are original. We would advise propsective buyers to view.

Catalogue Note

This basma is a later replacement, probably from the nineteenth century.  Most of the original rizas and basma from 16th century Russia have not survived as they were melted down in the Time of Troubles to produce coins to pay for the troops.
