Catalogue Note

The Little Humpbacked Horse tells the adventurous tale of an unappreciated boy and his magical horse. Korovin designed for this ballet production several times throughout his career, beginning in 1901 for the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, then again in 1912 (and possibly 1922) for the Kirov Ballet at the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg (Leningrad). The present designs were prepared for a later production, circa 1925 in Paris. Each painting exhibits the thick brushstrokes and glittering flecks of color that characterize his Impressionist oeuvre.
