Condition
The paper has been laid on canvas, which has two repairs to the reverse, one of which is a patch. There are nicks and creases to the edges of the paper. There is a tear 12cm. long running up from the middle of the lower edge. There is a layer of light surface dirt and discoloured varnish. UV reveals a few spots of retouching in places. Held in a simple slip frame missing the lower edge.

Executed in the early 1890s, the offered lot is a preparatory sketch for The Arch of Titus. Rome in the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, formerly in the collection of the Rzhevsky brothers.
