Description
- Jacob Grimmer
- a landscape with farmers harvesting, figures having a picknick to the left, a village beyond
- oil on panel
- 31 by 45.2 cm.
Condition
The illustration is representative for the actual painting although the lighter tones have a bit less contrast than the image in the catalogue suggests. The panel consists of two planks, joined horizontally and is cradled. Abrasion of the paint surface is visible throughout, e.g. in the sky and in the centre. Diagonal craquelre is visible in the upper right and centre left as well as a minor spot of paint loss in the upper right. Discoloured retouchings can be seen, mainly in the darker colours and in the sky. The paint surface is covered with a thick and slightly dirty varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light reveals areas of retouching throughout, but especially in the sky, the cornfield and in the village. The varnish seems to be unevenly cleaned. Offered in a layered wood frame with ebony borders, in fair condition. (JD)

Catalogue Note
This work is presumably intended as a month or as one of the four seasons. Both Jacob and his son Abel Grimmer (ca 1565 - after 1620) were known for their series of seasons or months, see for example the Four seasons by Jacob, dated 1575, in the Szépmüvészeti Muzeum, Budapest (inv. nos. 553-558, see R. de Berthier de Sauvigny, Jacob et Abel Grimmer. Catalogue raisonné, Brussel 1991, p. 62, cat. no. XIX, reproduced figs. 8-11 on pp. 65-7).
