Description
- Raffaello Sanzio, called Raphael
- Holy Family with St John the Baptist as a child
- oil on canvas, unframed
- 104 by 85 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is darker and warmer in tone than the illustration in the catalogue suggests. The canvas is relined. The paint surface has been flattened due to the relining and has suffered from dryness. The paint surface is under a dense cracquelure pattern. Tiny spots of discoloured retouchings are visible in the face of Madonna, and in the bodies of the infants. The paint surface is covered with a dirty and discoloured varnish layer.
Inspection under UV-light reveals the abovementioned retouchings. The varnish seems to be unevenly cleaned and impedes UV inspection of the background areas. Offered unframed. (JD)
