Description
- Rogier van der Weyden
- The descent from the cross
- oil on panel, the reverse branded with the Antwerp panel maker's mark
- 105.3 by 73.8 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is warmer and deeper in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel consists of three planks which are joined vertically and is bevelled along the upper and lower edge. The planks are reinforced with canvas strips and battons on the reverse. Thinness and discoloured retouchings are visible throughout. There is a slight tendency towards cupping in the lower centre. Otherwise the painting is in good condition.
The paint surface is under a glossy and thick varnish layer. Inspection under UV-light reveals additional retouchings and strenghtening in all the figures as well as the filled and retouched joins. Offered in a plain, black painted wood frame, a few chips. (JD)
