Description
- Charles Jones
- selected images of vegetables and fruit
a group of 3 photographs, including 'Onion, Ailsa Craig,' 'Carrots, Intermediate Genus,' and 'Pear, Marie Louin,' printing-out-paper prints, each initialed and titled by the photographer in pencil on the reverse, matted, framed, circa 1900 (3)
Condition
These luminous early prints, on double-weight paper with a glossy surface, are in generally very good to excellent condition. Each print has been affixed (floated) to a textured mount. The reverse of each mount has a window for viewing the reverse of the photograph.
'Onion, Ailsa Craig'- The lower edge is somewhat rubbed. The corners are bumped, the upper right corner has a small crease, and there is some emulsion loss at the lower left corner tip. When examined in raking light, there are tiny deposits of original retouching and two small creases, not breaking the emulsion, that are somewhat visible.
'Carrots' - The corners are bumped. In raking light, tiny deposits of original retouching are visible in the dark areas, as well as a 3/8-inch indentation not breaking the emulsion in the upper central portion of the print. There are two thin, small (1/2- and 1/8-inch) streaks, possibly ink, at the lower right edge of the print. Across the top edge, there is a 1/4-inch swath where the image is somewhat lighter than the rest. This appears to have been a result of processing, rather than a condition occurring later.
'Pear, Marie Louin' - The corners are bumped. When examined in raking light, the following are visible: tiny deposits of original retouching, mostly in the dark areas; a tiny 1/8-inch crescent-shaped indentation not breaking the emulsion in the upper left quadrant; two 3/8-inch crescent-shaped handling creases not breaking the emulsion in the center left portion of the print; and a small, pencil point-sized area that could be an indentation, or may be retouching, in the light area in the lower central portion of the print. There are three tiny deposits, possibly ink, at the upper right side near the corner.
