Catalogue Note

In a 1976 letter, The Museum of Modern Art's John Szarkowski wrote to Ansel Adams after receiving Portfolio VII,

'It is simply magnificent. . . And some of the old friends are better than ever in these prints.  I don't think I have ever seen such a beautiful print of the Horizontal Aspens.  It is simply radiant.  This is also one of my all-time favorites; I find it even more moving than the great vertical aspens' (Ansel Adams: Letters and Images, 1916-1984, p. 341).
