Catalogue Note

The photograph offered here, as that in Lot 57, was first published in Paul Strand's and Claude Roy's evocative volume of life in France, La France de Profil (Lausanne: La Guilde de Livre, 1952).  Strand concentrated on the details and rituals of the ordinary man: cafés, shop doors and windows, marshes, trees, a horse-drawn cart, for instance.  Windows and doors were favored subjects for Strand.  He saw them as evidence of humanity and photographed them throughout his career.

It is believed that this is the only print of this image extant.  According to the Paul Strand Archive, there were three versions of Window Near Livarot.  In the other versions, a woman or part of a woman's shoulder are visible at the edge of the frame.
