Catalogue Note

The image offered here is one of six portrait studies of the Russian poet Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (1893-1930) taken by Rodchenko in April 1924.  This portrait was incorporated into a photomontage used as the cover illustration of Mayakovsky's 1926 book of poetry, Razgovor s fininspektorom o poesii (A Conversation with the Finance Inspector about Poetry).  Another study from the April 1924 sitting was used by Rodchenko for the photomontage on the back cover of the book.  For other portraits from this sitting, and an illustration of the book's cover, see Aleksandr Rodchenko (MoMA, 1998), pp. 207-14.
