Catalogue Note

Paul Jordan Smith (1885 - 1971) was a literary critic for the Los Angeles Times and a close friend of Edward Weston.  Smith's wife was Sarah Bixby-Smith, the director of the Friday Morning Club, which hosted one of Weston's earliest shows in 1914, and continued to exhibit his work almost yearly after 1917.  Smith sat for Weston at least three times, in 1919, 1920, and for the photographs offered here, in 1923 (cf. Conger 46).
