Catalogue Note
Eva Besnyö was born in Budapest in 1910, although she emigrated to the Netherlands in 1932 and is often considered a Dutch photographer. She was in fact born on the same street as Robert Capa, and the two were childhood friends. It was she who, meeting Capa in Berlin in 1931 (where he had fled the dictatorial regime in Hungary of Miklós Horthy), advised Capa to take up photojournalism, and who introduced him to the Dephot agency and the start of his career.
Kilenyi was also originally Hungarian, a famous pianist who was a child prodigy.
