Description
- Julia Margaret Cameron
- 'The Mourner' (Mary Hillier), 1859
Albumen print, mounted on card with gilt border. Signed and annotated 'From Life Taken at Freshwater' below the image and inscribed to Mrs Henry Smith on the mount. Colnaghi blindstamp on the mount. Framed.
Provenance
Sotheby's London, 29th March 1985, lot 168.
Literature
Cox, J. & Ford, C. 2003 cat. no. 259 (where it is not entitled The Mourner).
Condition
The print is yellower in tone than suggested by the catalogue illustration and, while it has certainly faded, it has faded uniformly overall. Signs of retouching in the lower left corner. Both mount and print are foxed but the print surface is largely good in spite of a few scuff marks mainly clustered in the lower right. The word 'Freshwater' in the inked inscription below the image has been writted over a coarsely scratched out erratum. The initial 'M' of the artist's signature runs from the mount onto the print slightly, thus confirming the originality of this mount.
