Catalogue Note

Irving Penn's famous series of Tradespeople takes its place in the history of photography next to Atget's Petits Métiers de Paris.  Both are great series, but where Atget is tender - one feels him to be a member of the tribes he describes - Penn nails his subjects like fragile butterflies pinned to a board.
