Catalogue Note

Erwin Blumenfeld is too little acknowledged for the great teacher he was.  Neither Irving Penn nor Richard Avedon could have had the career that they had without Blumenfeld's mastery before them.  A transplanted European Modernist in the heart of the New York fashion world, he brought the expectation that any photograph, however commercial, should be rich in visual culture and never trivial.  A committed visual experimenter and brilliant communicator through photographs, Blumenfeld is as important to fashion photography as an Alexey Brodovitch or an Alexander Liberman.
