Catalogue Note

The image offered here shows Sierra Club members gathered for a meal in the 1920s at Garnet Lake camp, now part of the almost 230,000-acre Ansel Adams Wilderness Area, designated as such in 1984 in the Sierra and Inyo National Forests.

Ansel Adams's history became inextricably linked with Yosemite beginning with his family's first visit there in 1916.  With his Kodak #1 Box Brownie, the fourteen-year-old made many photographs, carefully framing what he saw through his view-finder during the month's stay.

In 1919, after several trips to the park, Adams joined the Sierra Club and became the summer custodian at LeConte Lodge, the club's headquarters in the Yosemite Valley.  The 1923 Sierra Club outing marked his first as a participant in the club's annual month-long mountain hiking trips.  Adams was made official photographer for the club's 1928, 1929, 1930, and 1932 trips. It is believed that this image is not included in any of the Sierra Club Outing portfolios.
