Description

  • Walter Chappell
  • untitled (tree shadow)
mounted, signed by the photographer in pencil on the mount, dated and numbered in unidentified hands in pencil and ink on the reverse, 1957

Provenance

Christie's New York, 18 April 2001, Sale 9618, Lot 147

Acquired by Nancy Richardson from the above

Condition

This early print, on paper with a slight surface sheen, is in excellent condition. When examined in high raking light, there are three areas with small pinpoint indentations that do not break the emulsion. These are difficult to see except under the closest examination. Also, only in high raking light, there are a number of extremely faint, light scratches scattered on the surface. None of these breaks the emulsion. The cream-colored mount is in very good to excellent condition. The corners are somewhat bumped, and there is slight age-darkening at the periphery of the print.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.

Catalogue Note

According to Walter Chappell authority David Scheinbaum, vintage prints by Chappell are scarce. In 1961, when the photographer was living and working in Rochester, a fire destroyed virtually all of his vintage prints and early negatives.  From that time, Chappell considered his early prints unique.
