Catalogue Note

En 1907, Léon Cauvy obtient la première bourse  Abd-el-Tif qu'il partage avec le peintre Paul Jouve. Séduit par l'Algérie, il  s'y installe et devient directeur de l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Alger de 1909 à sa mort en 1933. Il expose régulièrement au Salon des Peintres Orientalistes français et au Salon des Artistes Orientalistes algériens et connaît rapidemment un succès exceptionnel. En 1909, le 18è Salon des Peintres Orientalistes français à Paris  expose une cinquantaine de toiles algériennes de Cauvy. En 1930, la large diffusion de son affiche sur le Centenaire de l'Algérie offre à Cauvy une notoriété internationale.
