Saint Jerome, or to give his full name Eusebius Hieronymous Sophronius (342-420), was born in Stridon in Dalamatia. He was one of the most important members of the early church and is recognised along with Saints Augustine, Ambrose and Gregory as one of the four "Fathers of the Church". His largest contribution being to translate the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin, a version known as the "Vulgate" (which today is still the official text of the Catholic Church).
He travelled widely before spending four years in the desert of Chalcis in Syria as a hermit, during this time he had a visions of angels appearing to him and sounding the trumpets of the Last Judgement, as portrayed in the present picture.
After leaving the desert he was to live in Antioch and Rome, before settling in Bethlehem in 386, after being accused of improper relations with a widow called Paula who was one of his close companions.
