The Roman canvas would suggest that the present painting is an early 17th century Italian copy after a design by Vouet which hither-till-now was only known through an engraving, in reverse, by Antoine Garnier, a painting of this composition is not recorded (see J. Thuillier, Vouet, Paris 1990, pp. 84-5, reproduced p. 85).
