Catalogue Note

Jan de Momper was born in Antwerp, although little is known of his early training, it is likely that he was related to the famous De Momper dynasty of landscape painters and may have trained in their workshop before becoming a master of the Guild of St Luke in 1635/6. He is first recorded in Rome in 1657, by a dated picture in the Galleria Doria Pamphlij although it is possible and indeed likely that he was active in Rome before this date. He was to remain the service of Cardinal Flavio Chigi until 1668.
