Catalogue Note
Placido Costanzi worked in the classical style of Carlo Maratta and studied for five years with Francesco Trevisani and then with Benedetto Luti. Although watercolours are rare in the artist's oeuvre, the figures can be compared to those in oil paintings by Costanzi such as The Angel with Hagar and Ishmael which was sold London, Sotheby's, 1 June 1989, lot 63, for £13,000.
